Willow, Hanas, and her uncle follow the stout man down the boardwalk and into a long, cabin-style building. Inside the entry, Willow’s eyes widen. The high walls display vampire hunter weapons from ages past—steel crossbows, iron stakes, and wooden boxes of poisonous powder, to name a few. The massive chandelier made from antlers brings her a sense of comfort and home she can’t explain.

As they exit the busy reception area and enter the seemingly never-ending hallways, which are lined with thick bulletproof glass on one side, the warm, smooth scent of fresh wood fills her nose. As she gazes out the windows at the snow-dusted beach that peeks out between munitions bays and ammo dumps, Willow is freshly reminded why she once dreamed about transferring here for initiate training.

But if I had come here to train, I wouldn’t have met Hanas. Saving my dad would be impossible without his help, since Ashe is so stubborn. Annoyed, she tries to push the realization aside. However, its truth sticks to the back of her mind.

She sneaks a look at Hanas, who walks beside her. Why is he so bent on helping me?

Re-Com Grey waves an arm at a room, allowing Willow and Hanas to enter first before he and her uncle trail in behind. Closing the door, Re-Com Grey offers them a seat at a long table composed of several desks pushed together. Various piles of papers and folders are strewn around the edges of the room.

Messy debriefing rooms must be a norm.

They all sit, Hanas to Willow’s left and Re-Com Grey at the head of the table to her right. Her uncle stands directly behind the region commander as if he’s some sort of bodyguard.

Weird.

“Before I say anything…” Willow begins. “No offense, Uncle, but I want to know if what I say is going to find its way to Vitya’s ears.” He is wearing the same uniform as Vitya’s men, and she knows for a fact it was Vitya himself who turned her uncle all those years ago. His loyalty is forever bound to Vitya, whether he likes it or not.

It’s Grey who answers, holding up a placating hand. “You can trust my friend. He is more a spy for us than a spy for Vitya.”

Hanas smiles in amusement. “A coin with two sides, if I ever saw one. I am certain Sir Vitya is tremendously entertained by the notion.”

Her uncle heaves a heavy sigh. “There isn’t an end in sight to his toying with me. But even when it’s stressful, I have my ways of getting back.”

Willow doesn’t like the grin on Hanas’s lips as he says, “Intriguing.”

“I don’t get it,” Willow says, cutting in. “How can we trust you if you’re a spy for—”

“—both sides? Easy. If it comes to it, I will always pick the vampire hunters over Vitya. I have children to protect, and I won’t let Vitya grab hold of them.”

Hanas folds his hands. “Sir Vitya was born to conquer, given his sire heritage.
